About Artist

James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American artist, who was born on July 10, 1834, in Lowell, Massachusetts, US. His paintings were signed in a very unique manner with a stylized butterfly possessing a long stinger for a tail. His most famous painting was "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" (1871), also known as Whistler's Mother where his own mother Anna Whistler posed for the painting. This painting became an universal icon of motherhood. It is also the most important American work residing outside the United States, i.e. in Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
